Communication can be done in various ways. The trick is to know the best to use. American sign language uses body language and lip patterns instead of oral sound. A person uses facial expressions, hands and the body to express thoughts or to pass a message. This mode of communication is used mainly among the deaf. However, friends, family and interpreters for the deaf also use it.
American sign language is like mother tongue. It differs from one region to another. This mode of communication is influenced by culture, tradition and place. As times change, the deaf learn new styles in order to keep their identity intact. The code differs in various regions due to the geographic location of schools for the deaf.
The International code (Gestuno) is mainly used at Deaflympics and meetings of the World Federation of the deaf. Recent Studies have shown that this code is complex for most people. It is more of an artificial kind. Most people think that the mode of communication for the deaf is not real. This is wrong. This mode is quite complex compared to other spoken types.
American sign language is not a visual version of an oral speech. It consists of signals and actions that that may not have a relationship. It has a well developed grammar that can be used to discuss debates and topics. It allows one to be able to understand meanings using their eyes. Finger spelling can be used. It consists of new signs. Almost anyone can understand this mode of communication since it involves facial expressions and body posture.
