What’s the easiest way for beginners to learn American Sign Language?
I am 22 years old and am interested in learning sign language. I am looking for advice on good books, websites, or even classes on Long Island, NY. I have checked the adult education program in my town but nothing is around now.
I have never taken any course before. I remember maybe half the alphabet or so from elementary school. Since this is new to me, I don’t want to completely trust my Google research without help from others. Thanks!
Books I would recommend would be the simple “ASL Dictionary” you can purchase at any large chain book store. It’s very straight forward, just like an English dictionary.
When I used to teach basic sign language at a community college, I used the book “Signing Illustrated” by Mickey Flodin. This book is categorized (a chapter on family signs, another on animals, etc.), plus it also has learning exercises at the end of each chapter.
As for classes, if you’ve already checked out the universities/colleges/community colleges, then check out churches, or community centers. Sometimes they offer small beginner classes.
